Being Saturday, I slept in until 7. The newest member of our little family, Fletcher (he adopted me last week), is the first thing I see every morning now. He is such a darling. Unfortunately, he spent most of his first week being ill with respiratory and urinary infections and getting to know the vet up close and personal, but he's doing much better now!
I love how much sunlight pours into the kitchen in the morning. The big window faces East and now that I had to cut down the tree just outside, the room is flooded with light. Such a cheery sight before one's first cup of coffee.
One of my favorite breakfasts is a home-made version of an Egg McMuffin - toasted muffin topped with a baked egg and also usually with slices of ham and cheese. But I'm low on groceries this morning, so it's just egg on muffin with a cup of tea. Yum!
While it is still cool(ish) outside, time to water the flowers! I don't have a whole lot right now, except for 4 large planters on the front porch. Here's one of them - the coleus has really taken off and you can hardly see the moss rose around the edges. Next year I'll plant separate pots just of moss rose and let the coleus spread to its heart's content.
And here's the reason I don't have much of anything planted. Recently had all the ground cover yanked out, leaving me with a LOT of dirt around the front of the house. But because we've had so much rain lately, weeds are taking over the dirt. I didn't get much weeding done before it got too hot for me.
Back inside and headed for the computer. I forgot to take any pictures of my messy desk. But I needed to update my budget and figure out how much I can spend this coming week. Last week was a budget-buster for sure. That little Fletcher cost a fortune in supplies and vet expenses! But so worth every penny.
Before I knew it, it was 11 am! I gave Fletcher his daily dose of antibiotic, gathered up my bags and headed out to do the grocery shopping. I do a rough menu every week so have a good idea of what I need when I go in the stores. This week I went to 3 stores, because I was hungry for a rhubarb pie (I have no idea why), but couldn't find any rhubarb anywhere The farmers market might've had some, but they were already packed up by the time I got there. So, here is my trunk after the shopping spree. Note the prominent boxes of cat litter!
I was beat by the time I had lugged everything into the house and put it away. Not as hot as many places, but this is typical for a Tennessee summer. And at 67, I no longer handle the heat as well as I once did.
My beautiful 17 year old cat, Cloudwalker, is sitting in "our" chair. Right now he's not feeling very happy, though, as he watches Fletcher casually stroll around the place as if he belonged there. The very nerve of that young cat! Cloudwalker has been king of the castle for lo these 17 years and he's not handling the change too well.
No bloodshed follows. Fletcher retreats to his "safe room" (the master bedroom) and Clowie and I settle down to watch some TV. I've been binging on all things Star Trek for a while now, and right now we're watching Deep Space 9. I put in the DVD and promptly fall asleep. I was definitely worn out!
After the nap (about 30 minutes), we start the episode over again and finally get to see it this time. Then it's time to make a pie! Not rhubarb, but once I had pie in my mind, it had to be. So I made a cherry pie instead. Nothing fancy, just pie filling and pre-made crusts, ready for the oven.
I also got started on the several loads of laundry that needed to be done.
One of my current projects is to renovate the master bath and redecorate the master bedroom. So I thought I'd try a little wallpaper stripping. That motivation didn't last very long.
Cloudwalker decided to visit the basement. He has an unfathomable affection for spending time in the basement. While he was down there, I let Fletcher have the run of the house while I made dinner. I'm particularly fond of ground beef patties served with peppers and onions, only this time I had some egg noodles so I cooked them up, mixed in the cooked peppers & onions, and added Ranch dressing (which was the only dressing I had. I thought I had Italian but alas, no, so used ranch instead.) It was surprisingly tasty.
After dinner it was back to the chair and snoozing in front of the TV. I have become my mother!! I went to bed around 10.
And that was my day! It was a good day, quiet and not too busy, and with cats, which always makes for a good day.
